Watch for the Redds in Little Red River (AR)
Our reporters from the trout waters, particularly the Little Red River, alert us that the brown trout are now in their spawn. And, when wade-fishing in these very wadable waters of the Little Red these days, anglers need to be careful not to damage the "redds," or their spawning beds. Lowell Myers says, "If you do wade in or pull a boat through the spawning areas, be careful where you walk and don't walk on or disturb their redds." The reason is simple: We want more brown trout available this spring! Greg Seaton, another Little Red guide, says, "The brown spawn is still going on but it has been sporadic this fall." Some browns that Greg and his crew are catching have spawned out while others are still carrying eggs. Greg also urges anglers to please be careful while wading to avoid the redds and notes, "The eggs remain in these areas until about February." You can catch browns now, but unlike the rainbows that might be in the slower water, browns will be found in the moving water.
