Broussards claim Redfish Cup title to cap great season
PENSACOLA, Fla. (Sept. 28, 2009) - After claiming the Academy Team of the Year presented by Crocs title at the final regular-season stop in Biloxi, Capt. Kevin and Cajun Phil Broussard from Lake Charles, La. surprised the crowd in Pensacola by besting the final five teams to also be crowned kings of the Crown Royal Redfish Cup Championship presented by Academy with a final-day total of 9.27 pounds.

"This is unbelievable, I can't describe what I'm feeling right now," said Kevin. "I thought winning Academy Team of the Year was as high as we could get. It's hard to believe all that we've accomplished this year and it means even more fishing with my dad. There's no ego there, nothing but love."

Day one and Day two leaders and defending Redfish Cup champions Paul Jueckstock (Deland, Fla.) and Manny Perez (Punta Gorda, Fla.) ended the tournament in second place with 7.09 pounds. Jeff Totten (Englewood, Fla.) and Ozzie Lessinger (Ft. Myers, Fla.) remained in third place after bringing in 5.91 pounds.

Mike Friday (Naples, Fla.) and Danny Latham (Punta Gorda, Fla.) settled for fourth with 2.75 pounds and rounding out the top five was the team of Bo Johnson (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Mike Del Duca, (Naples, Fla.) finishing fifth.

"Wow!" was the first word to escape Cajun Phil's mouth when asked to describe this win.

"We realized that dreams do come true. We had accomplished something together that we had talked about, but really didn't think was possible. Winning "Team of the Year", and Redfish Cup "Champions", both in the same year, and winning it with my son...Friends, let me tell you, it doesn't get any better than that. I am very proud to be Capt. Kevin's father and fishing partner."

Along with the coveted championship trophies, the Broussards also walked away with the first-place prize of $50,000 plus additional bonuses from title sponsor Crown Royal and Redfish Cup sponsor Mystik Lubricants.

The Broussard duo has had quite a track record throughout their years in The Redfish Cup, competing in the Redfish Cup tournament circuit since its second year in 2004. They placed third in the Port Aransas, Texas tournament in 2006 and then won their first Redfish Cup tournament in Lafitte, La. in 2007.

They were the runners up in the 2008 Academy Team of the Year race with a 10-point spread between them and the team of Mark Sepe and Andrew Bostick. Until now, the 2008 season was possibly their most notable season with two second-place finishes in the Hopedale, La. and Port Arthur, Texas tournaments and a fifth-place finish in the Championship.

Throughout the 2009 season, the Broussards secured and maintained a strong position in the Team of the Year race from day one of the 2009 season. They had a fourth-place finish at the Punta Gorda, Fla. tournament back in April; they placed 18th in the Kemah, Texas tournament in early June; seventh in the Chalmette, La. tournament in July and 12th at the Biloxi, Miss. tournament at the end of August. Proving that slow and steady wins the race, the Broussards weighed in at the top 20 at every 2009 Redfish Cup tournament, which landed them the coveted Team of the Year title.
