WEATHER ADVISORIES
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) urges boat owners to properly secure their boats in advance of sustained strong winds from Tropical Storm Fay, which continues to hover over and skirt the state. Vessels that break free can cause problems to waterways with pollution from spilled fuel and oil, and boats can drift into bridges, docks, seawalls and piers, causing interference to navigation and damaging the boats themselves.
TODAY'S FEATURE Miscellaneous You know you've been on the road a bit too-much when you write someone a note asking why there are no results available from their event and the reply is "because it's tomorrow."
Between the Olympics on television, events on the road, and a pretty healthy schedule of meetings and other work, it appears the internal clock is confused. I worked all day yesterday totally convinced it was Thursday. The second telephone call I made at an appointed time should have been a contextual clue, but I moved on, completely convinced everyone else was getting slack in their work practices.
As is sometimes said "my bad."
And for those of you expecting the name of the first million-dollar winner in fantasy sports history, well, "my bad."
Today, in Columbia, South Carolina, the FLW Fantasy Fishing folks will announce which of the fifteen finalists will become the third person ever to cash a $1 million check from a fishing tournament. OK, it's from a series of seven tournaments, but the idea's the same - $1 million bucks for picking the best fantasy group of FLW anglers across the FLW Tour season.
And the $1 million isn't all the cash that will be awarded today. Donna Stalnaker, an insurance underwriter from Kent, Ohio, will be there to receive her $100,000 prize for finishing first in the seventh fantasy event of the season. Stalnaker says it's "unbelievable - my friends aren't going to believe this." And it is one of those stories of being just in the nick of time. She entered the first tournament in February, but problems with her home computer kept her from entering again until the last tournament. "I got my computer fixed just in time for the last tournament," she says, "my friends won't believe this."
She's the only one of the sixteen winners who know what to expect tomorrow. The fifteen fantasy finalists have no idea where they've finished in the order. There are a variety of significant prizes (bass boats, trucks, money, gift cards, etc) but only one of them will leave a millionaire.
Here, in case you want to pick your own winner, are the fifteen finalists - in alphabetical order:
1. Ms. Madge Austin, Elmhurst, Pa. (Scranton, Pa.)
2. Mr. Steve Braun, Hartland, Wis. (Milwaukee, Wis.)
3. Mr. James Brown, Lodi, Calif. (Stockton-Sacramento, Calif.)
4. Ms. Dixie Canterbury, Odenville, Ala. (Birmingham, Ala.)
5. Mr. Ron James, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
6. Mr. Gary McMullin, Overland Park, Kan. (Kansas City, Kan.)
7. Mr. Brent Meyer, Crawfordville, Fla. (Tallahassee, Fla.)
8. Mr. Jeffrey Nelson, New Brighton, Minn. (Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.)
9. Mr. Peyote Perryman, Raleigh, N.C.
10. Mr. Tim Potoczny, Gurnee, Ill. (Chicago)
11. Mr. Steve Reed, Davis, Calif. (Sacramento)
12. Mr. Ken Sessions, Pace, Fla. (Pensacola, Fla.)
13. Mr. Jim Stallard, Wilmington, N.C.
14. Mr. Michael Thompson, St. Michael, Minn. (Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.)
15. Mr. Carl Trussell, Orange, Tex. (Beaumont, Texas)
By 1 PM tomorrow afternoon, we'll know which of them has hit the jackpot in a fantasy sports event that has gotten global attention- literally. According to FLW officials, entries have been received from around the globe. Fantasy sports observers say the event has become one of the most talked-about fantasy events on record.
And the good news is that it really IS tomorrow.
We'll have the results in Friday's edition of The Fishing Wire.
