COMPETITIONS The Empire Division of the $8.8 million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League® will visit Oneida Lake in Brewerton August 30 for the fourth of five regular-season events. As many as 400 anglers (200 boaters and 200 co-anglers) may gather in Trenton, Michigan and the Detroit River August 30 for the fourth of five Bass Fishing League Michigan Division Tournaments. Michael Bennett was a long way from his Lincoln, California, home when fishing the 2008 Forrest Wood Cup on South Carolina's Lake Murray, but that didn't stop him from dipping into his west-coast bag of tricks. Employing a bait and tactic made popular in the West, Bennett become the youngest-ever winner of the Forrest Wood Cup and just the second professional bass angler to win $1 million dollars from a single event. On Sunday, Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish cup anglers Mark Sepe and Andrew Bostick climbed down from the stage with championship belts slung across their shoulders for the second time this season. With their latest win, Sepe and Bostick have now won half of the regular-season events on the Redfish Cup circuit. Tune in Sunday, August 24, to "FLW Outdoors" on FSN for complete coverage of the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour event held on Lake Sharpe in Pierre, South Dakota. The second tournament of the season concludes with the winning pro claiming a cash prize of up to $100,000. SUMMITS The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has rescheduled the summit, "Florida's Wildlife: On the front line of climate change," to October 1-3 at the Rosen PLAZA in Orlando. The summit, originally scheduled for this week, was postponed because of approaching tropical storm Fay, will highlight the challenges facing wildlife managers, governments, industry leaders and the public in the next 50 years amid the realities of climate change. YOUTH For 40 novice anglers from Boys & Girls Clubs around the country, having the opportunity to fish alongside the Bassmaster Elite Series professional anglers was an experience of a lifetime. The young anglers participated in the Future Fisherman Foundation's Youth Fishing competition held Saturday, August 2, in Buffalo, New York, during the Elite Series Empire Chase. TODAY'S FEATURE Instant Millionaires
In a release from BASS yesterday, I learned that several professional anglers are "poised" to join the elite group of million dollar winners. BASS has 29 these days, and about four others are one tournament win away. In the FLW, there are million dollar winners, including Scott Suggs and Michael Bennett. Suggs was the first pro angler ever to bank a $1 million payday for a single event when he won the Forrest Wood Cup last year. Bennett became the second when he won the Cup in Columbia, South Carolina.
Right now, fifteen FLW Fantasy Fishing finalists (glad I'm not reading this aloud) are getting ready for a day of celebration that will end with one of them getting the ceremonial "big check" for photos and a real-live, sign-the-back-and deposit-it check from the FLW for winning the Fantasy Fishing contest. The Fourteen other FLW Fantasy Fishing finalists are also in line for receive big prizes, too, everything from a Ranger bass boat, and Chevy Silverado, to $25,000 Walmart gift card and a $20,000 BP gas card. Originally, the big fantasy event was to be held in Atlanta, but the enthusiastic crowds and especially friendly venue of the Colonial Center in Columbia led Jacobs to make the last-minute decision to move the festivities there. The FLW Fantasy Fishing season was launched in February, with the start of the Walmart FLW Tour. Players selected 10 bass pros before each of seven tournaments. The winner of each tournament won $100,000 and the player who accumulated the most points over seven tournaments, will be named champion and win $1 million. In addition to the $1 million grand prize, seven players have already won $100,000 each and more than 4,000 other prizes were awarded throughout the season. FLW Fantasy Fishing has awarded prizes to players in Canada, Australia, Estonia, South Africa, Japan, Poland and Indonesia. As always, we'll keep you posted. |
