AWARDS
Bella Vista, Arkansas' Mike McClelland collected enough weight throughout the Bassmaster Elite Series season to take the $20,000 Berkley Heavweight Award. McClelland was awarded the prize at the season-ending Champion's Choice on Oneida Lake out of Syracuse, New York.
He didn't realize how difficult a Bassmaster Elite Series season with two victories could be, but Friday, Elite pro Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Michigan, put the ups and downs behind him as he was named the 2008 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year.

BOATING
The upcoming FLW Outdoors Show in Columbia, South Carolina, August 14-17 will serve as the first public viewing of the 2009 model Ranger boats.

COMPETITIONS
When he hoisted the $1 million paycheck in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ranger Pro Scott Suggs, winner of the 2007 Forrest Wood Cup, became the sole member of a very exclusive club: the only professional bass angler to ever collect a seven-figure payday for winning a single event. But from August 14-17 on South Carolina's Lake Murray, some 60 Ranger Pros will be vying to duplicate Suggs' feat.

EVENTS
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled a series of public workshops to receive comments regarding a possible closed harvest season for blue crabs. The FWC is looking at ways to create a closed blue crab harvest season so lost and abandoned traps can be collected and removed from Florida's coastal waters.

FISHING
If you have never targeted chain pickerel or longnose gar on a fishing trip, Georgia Wildlife Resources Division biologists say you may be missing out, the chain pickerel and gar are exceptional fighters and create a tremendous challenge for anglers.

MEDIA ADVISORY
Through a cooperative effort between the FishAmerica Foundation, National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Restoration Center, and North Olympic Salmon Coalition, the media along with Members of Congress have been invited to tour the newly restored Salmon Creek Estuary in Port Hadlock, Washington, and learn how federal, state and nonprofit groups worked to restore this degraded estuary, damaged by wood waste from a lumber mill.

MISCELLANEOUS
Capping yet another successful season on the tournament trail in 2008, Ranger Pros took home top honors in both the FLW Bass and Walleye tournament divisions.

TELEVISION
Chris Rose, John Salley and Charissa Thompson will join the world's top professional bass anglers at the 2008 Forrest Wood Cup in Columbia, South Carolina when the trio come to town to tape FSN's hit "Best Damn Sports Show Period."

Fishing Wire Snapshot - Week Of August 11, 2008

Washington County, Florida resident James Mitchell now holds the Florida state-record for blue catfish. Last Monday afternoon, Mitchell took the 64 pound, 8 ounce, 53 1/2 inch long blue cat on the Choctawhatchee River, breaking the previous state record by three pounds. The 64-year-old Mitchell, who is disabled but still enjoys fishing, needed the help of his son and grandson to pull the fish over the side of his boat. He said the one-minute fight left him worn out.
